I'm heading down to Kauai for 10 days next month and I am aware that peacock bass can be found in the waters. Does anyone know if you have to have a guide or are there some public fishing spots on the island?

Any info will be appreciated

Thanks :)

Yes you can fish in the reservoirs and rivers in Kauai but it is not easy to bank fish since most of it is has a lot of plants in the way and the banks can be steep depending on the water level. But you can in some spots. Your best bet is to get a guide with a boat and have him take you fishing. I have fished for peacock bass both in Kauai and Oahu and it is a great time. I just went on a trip in Oahu in May and caught 4 on a half day trip.

Just make sure you are fishing at a public access area and you should have no issues. Here is the site.

Thank you very much! Idk how I never found that site. Bank fishing is all I ever do, so hopefully the plants would cause no problems. Im gonna stay away from a guide because I have a fear of spending 300 dollars per person and getting skunked :(

Hiring a guide is not a bad idea. The money your spending isn't just to catch fish but to gain local knowledge about a certain area or species. Even if you don't catch fish (I'm willing to bet you will at least have shots at fish) you can go back to the spots he took you and fish there again. Also look for the same type of water he was telling you to fish in other areas. My opinion is a little bias because I'm a guide but I still hire a guide when going to a unfamiliar area. I usually hire a guide the first day and put the rest together as I go along. Good luck!

Thanks, the only problem with going back to the guides spots is that apparently you really can't because it's on private property, if I was confident I could catch one with a guide I would get one, but because of that uncertainty me and my dad just don't want to hire one.
