hi guys
i'm using a canister filter for the first time (fx5) and was wonder if i should keep it running during a water change. i left it on for the first water change last week but it splashes quite a bit. would i be hurting my BB colony if it turned it off for about an hour?

Just leave it on. Position the nozzle downwards to avoid splashing. As long as the water level after draining is well above the intake of the FX5, it would work.

I don't off my FX5 during water change unless im doing large amount (>50%)

I turn mine off. The main concern is the water hasn't had enough time for treatment and the chlorine will damage your cycle. If you're using water that doesn't have chlorine or chloramines, then it shouldn't matter.

I keep my all my filters running while filling my tanks. Also the splashing helps vaporize the chlorine in tap water.

Personal preference but you could always turn the filter down using the output aquastop valve if you don't want to turn it completely off.

Thanx Guys...I guess i'll just leave them on and deal with the splashing. The intake reaches almost to the bottom of the tank and i only change 50% at a time so that shouldn't be a problem.
Never thought of how long it takes for my tap water treatment to work though. Any thoughts?

Prime would be quite fast since it's concentrated

I turn my off,had an experience one time where my local water company up the chloramine for treatment purposes in my area and i destroyed my bb in my canister.if you are using well water you should be fine, but depending on your local water company dosing policy your conditioner my not work instantly. (i was using prime at the time)prime is good but it also depends on the cirulation of the water for it to spread out and treat all the new water. just my experince though

Rule of thumb is if your water is direct from tap and you dechlor entire tank volume, then you should off the filters until finished.
If your water is treated and dechlorinated before adding to the tank, then you can leave your filters on.
