So I had an idea a while ago while building a diy background on a 90g that I would keep all of my equipment hidden behind the bg and instead of a canister filter I would use a mat filter also hidden behind the background. Problem was instead of using the air pump with lift tube idea with more passive suction (the tried tested and true method) I decided that I could do the same thing with a water pump in the back creating the low pressure and the outflow running through a hole into the tank. Sure enough my dumb ass had created mechanical filtration that was almost impossible to get out and clean with how I'd designed the background.
Lesson learned, a lot of things are done a certain way for a reason.
