I have had very horrible luck with this fish. My first one was about 6" or so and my juvi albino channel catfish ate him. That catfish is recently removed so I thought I would give it another go. I went to my LFS and boom they had one that was about 3". I swooped that little bugger up and took him home. I put him in the 40b that houses 2 2-2.5" EBJD a 4" gold jack a bn pleco and black ruby barbs. 3 hours later I noticed that the EBJD were attacking him. Sadly I caught it a little to late as they had already took a large chunk out of him. I have a buddy that is going to grow one out for me until it can be put in one of my tanks. What size do you think is safe?

With a cichlid that has already proven he doesn't like them, I'd say no reasonable size. I know it sucks, but I too had to temporarily give up knife fish for my cichlids.

When having a love for a certain type of fish like I do my BGK and Brown ghost knife I say it's best to build around them instead of wondering if ur tank mates will except the knife. I have a large community and I'll post a video of my 150 gallon I do have cichlids in there. But my knives come first. I started with all peaceful fish, and build up from there it just turns out that I've been lucky enough to maintain a peaceful community of fish. Some people would say the combos that I have in my tank aren't possible and shouldn't be done but for me they work maybe it's the order in which they were introduced . Everyone in my tank has their own role though and their own place. Take a look at my video anything is possible maybe getting a fish that would control the fish that is going after the knife would work. Good luck

I did a lot of research on BGK before buying mine, I am still learning, but the one thing that everyone agrees on is that they require pristine water, and catfish are simply too messy.
Like everyone said, build another tank around the BGK's needs.

My BGK gets along with my blood parrot and my clown loaches. I hand feed him though bc if i did not imo he would never get to the food quick enough.

just a FYI BKG need a little cave. or even a clear tube, they are bat **** blind and perceive there surrounding by a week electrical field they generate in there tail.

mines about 13" had going on 4 years. no issue with oscars, cats or jags, he just needs a cave or tube to lay in.

They are nocturnal, so looking for an active fish they are not it, but cool as hell.

In regards to water quality, I had mine for 8 years; and he withstood some pretty horrific water qualities over the years as I was a total noob.

I actually must say I had stupid luck with my bgk, I got him as my tank was cycling. He was the only fish of the few I had that survived... strange since he should have been the first to go considering how fragile they seem to be. He has grown in the 2 years I have had him. He started out maybe 5" and he is probably 8 or 9" now... can't wait to see him as a 20" monster.
