I learned this lesson the hard way today during a water change. My 5" Red Texas had piled all the sand at one end of his 50 gallon tank. It was about 6" deep. I did not want gas pockets to form, so I put a hand in the tank and started redistributing the sand across the bottom of the tank. Red Tex did not take to kindly to that and bit my hand. I have 2 semicircular welts from his jaws on my hand where he bit me. One of them broke the skin.

I had heard they could be mean and that is why he is in a tank by himself. From now on I'll use something other than my hand to fix the sand.

I had a midas who used to do that everytime i put my hand in. Drew blood alot

Sent from my SGH-T989 using MonsterAquariaNetwork App

I had a Severum that drew blood from my arm, but not from the bite, he nipped me and I pulled my hand back and hit my hand on the tank side

My blood parrots have tried several times to get me. Since they have the normal blood parrot mouth that can't close, they are not able to bite.

Dam! My midevil x bloodparrot has yet to nip at me. Its only a matter of time i guess lol

< my red devil. everytime i clean its a project not to get bit. I used to read post about them being mean, but im like na he never will be. I was wrong. I do feed him mealworms by hand, but he comes to the top for that. Anytime my hand is in the tank he goes for it. almost broke my light and lid from him bitting me off guard. But your fish only being 5'' that seems early to be mean. My red devil didn't start until about 8''. Gl with your rt hes going to be a beast.

nice, my jardini used to bite me all the time. he would leave huge scrapes from his teeth tho. plenty of blood
