I am draining and selling my 210g this week end. The replacement tank is going to require a little prep before I can fill it so I will be moving fish to a spare tank. The spare is to small for all the sand I will be removing(200#). I dont want the BB in the sand to die. Any suggestions? Also, if I take the media out of the sump and put it into the tank with the fish, it should be ok right? Any thoughts?

^ agreed, i would say a lot will depend how long you have to wait before the old sand goes into thwenew tank...

The filter media will be fine floating with the fish. I've done that a lot.

As far as the sand the best thing I can think of is to put it in a big garbage can filled with water with something for circulation like a powerhead. You also need an ammonia source depending on how long you're leaving it (up to a week it should be fine without), you can either add pure ammonia or, stick some shrimp or something in a filter bag and leave it there.

Is this a saltwater tank? Or are you running an undergravel filter? If no, I wouldn't even bother. Most of your BB will be in your filter's media. Sand in freshwater tanks, for the most part, is a nitrate factory anyway.

I would tend to agree but I do believe a lot of BB eside in the substrate.

I need probably a week to prep the tank and remove the old tank and get the new one situated. My main concern is the bacteria dying and causing some kind of toxin in the water.
