I recently got some apistogramma nijssenni for my 33 gallon (48"x12"x12", it's a midget 55 gallon, big footprint) and I was wondering if I could throw in another pair of a different species of apisto without having to worry about them inter-breeding and hybridizing?

Also, are pairs ok? I've also read that some people keep them with one male and a few females. Current tank mates are small tetras, corys, small loaches, baby BN plecos.

I keep most of my apistos in pairs. As for hybridization, they usually prefer females of their own type but the risk would exist. Why not get another pair/trio of the nijsseni.

Also, I haven't always had the best luck keeping cories with apistos. When teh apistos start breeding, they can be pretty nasty to the cories so keep an eye on that.

I believe nijsseni are one of the pairing apistos, not usually harem ones.

I noticed the male picking on my corys today. :(

I'm going to move the corys to their own tank in an attempt to get them to spawn, and finish planting their shared tank. Hopefully when it's completely planted everyone will have enough cover to share. If this doesn't work, Im going to have to get rid of the apistos.

add a bunch of coconut huts, leaf litter, or small pieces of driftwood stacked up to help as well.
