are they really that are to care for compared to other fish? i am considering changing my 55g over to a highly planted discus tank. i am currently doing 2-3 40% water changes a week so the WC area is covered and my water is always in perfect condition, pH ~6.4. i would like to keep 5 discus and maybe 3 rams in the planted tank, do the whole pressurized CO2 thing. what kind of filtration is recommended for discus, higher current, lower current, wet/dry, canister, or HOBs?

I think you are wanting to jump in far too deep. Figure out the planted tank or the discus first. Perfect conditions for both don't have a large overlap. If you intend to put in co2, don't use any surface agitation, or injecting the co2 will be a waste.
