I've been reading about ferrits being kept indoors and some sites say something about feeding them different food wen they're inside to stop them sweating or sometihng but doesnt go into great detail? Anyone clear this up for me? And are there aynything else different about keeping them indoors as to outdoors?

I've had four ferrets and I do not know anything about diet affecting their sweating; however, they do have difficulty regulating body temperature so if you keep them outside it will have to be a nice environment or heating/air conditioned. They are also overbreed by Marshalls and a lot of them are susceptible to illness. Of the four I had the youngest about 2-3 just up and died, one had lymphoma just put it to sleep a few days ago, and one has kushing's disease which causes all their hair to fall out. They are very fun and I don't want to discourage you from getting them I just thought you should know.

never herd of anyone keeping ferrets out side o.o

Have you ever smelled a ferret?....

We raised 7 ferrets over a number of years, and really, the amount of smell is completely overblown. If the ferret has been de-scented (had its scent gland removed) and is bathed on a regular basis, and the bedding washed on a regular basis, they're no more fragrant than a dog or cat. Especially as bad as some people let their cat litter boxes get.

Ferrets should only be kept inside. They are a completely domesticated species, and normally will not survive if left alone outside. They have specific temperature and dietary requirements. They are also VERY social animals, and should be interacted with daily. They can be just as much a loving, playful pet as any dog or cat, and should be treated as such.

They also sell something for the water - for the life of me I can't remember that makes them not smell as bad. They don't really smell all that bad to me in the first place, just a different type of odor.

No don't get the stuff for the water. I got it and it gave my ferrets the runs for like a week. Ferrets can be kept outside you just need to keep them safe from extreme heat and cold. The smell is manageable. DO NOT bathe often bathing sends their glands into overdrive and can actually make them smell more. Give them a bath once every three months and you should be fine.

I take it most of you guys are out in the states?

Iv kept ferrets longer than I've kept fish, i don't know what the breeding is like out there, but in the UK most come from working stock. Family members, friends and myself all keep ferrets, I've kept them both inside and out, and only ever had issues with temperature, during the 34degree summer we had a few years back, which was easily remedied by increasing the amount of water available.

Kept in a hutch/run outside, even coming down to find it buried under a foot of snow, all four were sat in the bedding area happy as Larry.

With regards to diet, there are a few things you should avoid feeding regularly, such as dairy products as it can up set there digestion. Mine live on a diet of fresh rabbit meat (Working ferrets so they catch a fair few), Dry foods, occasional treat of eggs and milk and a great vitamin supplement called ferretvite.

If you are buying them as pets as kits it is very very important to handle them at every opportunity as Conner said they are very social but need regular handling at a young age to get them out of the biting habit, you'll probably find you will end up with bloody fingers somewhere down the line.
Hope this helps

I do believe Ferreting is illegal in the US so I believe no one else keeps their ferrets like that. That being said I wouldn't mind keeping mine outside but Minnesota winters would more than likely kill them unless I were to install some sort of space heater to keep them warm.
