Was reading a old aquarium magazine and they talked about keeping flake food in the freezer(after opening the package or can) between feedings as it will hold nutrients better and remain fresher. Any of you see any advantage to this?
I have read that and I think it may even be on a couple of food products. But i have been at this for 25 years and have never done it. I also do not see my fish spitting any food out.
i know this is only common sense for human food and things such as Brine Shrimp etc. but never considered it for fish flakes. Smitty I was just wondering if it would keep better as far as the fish mine would eat just about anything that floats into the tank.
Unless you feed very little or have excessively large amounts of opened food stored away, I don't see how freezing an already dried food will really increase the longevity of the nutrients in it.
I buy fish food in bulk. I use canning jars/mason jars and store them in the fridge with a pack or two of those silica gel packs to eat any of the moisture/oxygen I introduce while I am packing the containers. Keeps it fresh and stinky for a long time. The problem I see with keeping your regular containers that you use/feed with everyday in the freezer/fridge is that everytime you take them out they will be sucking ALOT of moisture from the air (ever did the condensation experiment?). You would have to let the container sit out for an hour or two to come to room temperature before you could open it to reduce the effect. When I am taking out some of my fridge stored food I let it sit for a few hours before opening the jar and taking out what I need for a month or so and put that in my regular feeding containers. I then close the storage jar tightly and put it back in the fridge, not to be opened until I need more food.
I buy my food by the pound And im always told to put the rest in the fridge. I never listen and ive never had problems and my flakes contain krill, herring, shrimp, bloodworms ect and has no preservatives. I can imagine brand names that have preservatives would be fine especially if not buying in bulk where huge amount would be left on the fish shelf for weeks or months.
Buying flake food in bulk can get it soggy. You can actually store your them in a bin and tape some silica packs to the bottom of the lid. That'll save them from getting soggy, eliminating moisture keeping it fresh and stinky for a long time.
