I am looking for some advise on keeping the tank cleen and clear. Generaly it is preety good, but After about a week and a half the water starts to get a little cloudy.
Currently I have a 55gal, with 2 plecos, and a 10" Oscar. The pleco are pretty large to, 7" and 9". I am running a HOB filter with a Furval 404. The last time I canged the filtration material I rearanged it a little for better performance, I have the pre filter, carbon, Bio material and filter floss in the baskets from bottom to top. So far what I have read this should work better than I had it before. So far it is working OK, so far I am on a two week schedule for maitance, I do a 30 - 50% water change every two weeks and I rinse out the canister at the water change and I do a material replacement once a month of half the carbon, and I replace the floss, I also rinse out the sponge material and the pre- filter in old water. The Bio material I leave alone, or just rince in the old water to remove and waste that made it through the first two stages.
I am also in the prosess of gathering some info on building a larger tank, I am looking to setup a 120 or 175 gal chiclid tank for breeding, I wanted to put in two Oscars, at least one pleco and I wanted to have something else in there like a Red Devil or such. What else can I put in there with them, I also wanted to get a fresh water eel, but that may be to much. What would you advise as a filtration set up?

Thanks for your advise.

The problem is thats too many big messy fish for that tank you should be doing 50% waterchange weekly at least and get building that big tank asap.

you have a good filter set up but you need to change water the least once a week...

What type of hob filter are you using? I have AC110's for all of my 55's and it keeps them clean, but I don't have all the messy fish that you have.

Also, what are you feeding the oscar?

With those kind of messy fish, I'd run at least double canisters, or a wet/dry. Either way, you're probably going to want to get about 10x turnover per hour (I am an overfiltration zealot). Change the water at least once a week, if not twice, and don't forget to clean your filter media.

Plecos are poo factories. Oscars are amazingly messy. You're going to have to be pretty diligent to keep your water quality good.
