I have 5 yoyos and I need a clever way to keep them out of my HOB filter. I currently have the top off the filter and I stuffed a pointy plastic plant between the filter and the backstrip to keep them from swimming up into the filter (I've picked 2 out already; one received a nasty scratch on its back from getting stuck. Not to worry, he's all better now). Is there a clever way to keep them out of the filter without keeping this nasty looking orange plant stuffed in the top of my tank? I'd like to put the top back on the filter as well.

A sponge pre-filter is worth a shot.

I mean the return. I have the intake covered but the return just looks sooooo inviting to them for some reason....

I stuff my return so full of media they can't get in.

I had the same problem with a couple of my yo-yo's, I simply cut a piece of the plastic strip that's made for the back edge of aquariums down to size, and made it so that it pretty much buts up tight to my filters. Lousy pic, but you should get the idea.
