Is it illegal to keep a native wild caught fish? I was thinking of going to the asian market to pick up one. There some pretty nice looking native specy fish such as trouts.

no its not, but be knowlegeable bout your regulations for your state as in size limit how you can catch them(hook and ine, net, ect) and for trout for them to be healthy would require a chiller for your tank as they perfer water under 65, but can handle up to 75 for a short while

not gona be able to keep a trout alive for very long just to let you know, thats why no one keeps em

trout need very specialized aquarium systems to thrive, like andy said. Depending on where you are, the rules regarding keeping natives depends on things like bag limits and whether you can possess live fish

agreed, the only fish on that chart you could keep would likely be the sunfishes and the catfish. if you're going to have a tank less than 200 gallons, only the crappie, bluegill and bullhead would work.

ya just look at laws of the state u want to fish, some of the char, cuttroat, strugon , and trout species are protected or haveing problems with there numbers in the wild. so check with the most up to date laws to make sure u dont go to jail or get a big heavy fine.

blue, i know you live in canada, but here in the US the government takes illegal fish keeping very seriously. to everyone - if you doubt that fish and game will come to check out your tank, i would think twice about that.
government agencies of all stripes that deal with aquariums have been cracking down lately. not long ago some snail keepers over at applesnail.net had to surrender their snails to USDA officials since they were obtained illegally by shipping without a permit. USDA and F&G agents are monitoring forums, ebay, and aquabid now. it's wise to know what you can and cannot keep.

that said. i also agree that you should not try to keep trout. the only trout that could be kept in an aquarium are some of the smaller Mexican and West Coast river-dwelling subspecies like the Lahontan and Little Kern Golden. and most of these are legally well-protected and illegal to even catch, let alone keep. even if it was legal, you would need such cold, well-oxygenated water that it would really be impractical.

i don't know much about the other native species, but i'm sure others can recommend species that would be suitable and that you could find at a fish market.
