I have 2 baby newts that were given to me in my 10 gallon tank with a sail fin pleco (moving out to the huge tank but still quite small) 3 glowlight tetras, beta, 2 platy. Is this a good idea or should I move them into a seperate tank?
Other than the betta all the fish sound OK with newts. Stay away from fin nipping fish, like barbs, and definetly puffers. I had an eastern newt with tiger barbs they nipped at his legs, and tail.
Years ago I had a few in a 20 gallon with a male betta. The betta never noticed the newts, but one day I was walked by and saw one of the newts clamped onto the tail of the betta. The betta was rapidly swimming back and forth with a newt-surfer until I got him to let go. After that the betta got his own tank. It was a red betta, so the newt may have thought the fins were bloodworms.
