I would like to keep some piranha, not because of their 'fearsome' reputation or for any macho crap, but because they really are beautiful fish. I have an 100x40x50 cm aquarium, is this large enough to house some? If so, what species do you suggest? I liked the look of Serrasalmus notatus, but I have no idea of what they need. I can over the fish about 3 water changes a week, whatever decor and food they need etc. Sorry if I have said anything stupid, but I have no idea what I'm doing (I usually keep plecos and rainbows so it isn't something I'm used to). If I can't keep any the tank size stated then I can't, it is no problem to me as I understand every fish needs to live happily. Thanks

A rhom or black piranha will be fine for a few years untill it hits 6" mark then a 75 or 55 will suffice. Piranhas need 2x filtration and wc other then that their great I love all 6 of mine :)

I was looking to only keep them in the tank if it could be a forever home as I can't upgrade anymore, looks like I will just have to stick with something smaller. Thanks

I believe a 100x40x50 cm aquarium is a 50 gal. You could keep a few different species in that. Spilo, Sanchezi just off the top of my head. Notatus are pretty rare here in the states and I'm not sure you'll see it offered often.

You definately want to decorate the tank a bit to help the fish feel more comfortable. It's an ambush predator that likes to hide so don't expect to see too much when they're young.

Are they hard to take care of as far as tank maintenance? It's not legal in California where I live but always wondered if they bite when doing water changes

Lol no but if they are starved for months and neglected possibly. I almost do 2x wc/week and they've never taken a shot. Theydid attack the vac last week but idk if he ran into it or what.
And as darth stated when young they will hide a lot! Amazing creatures imo

There is a gallonage calculator on this site, I suggest you hunt it down, type in your dimensions, convert to gallons, and go from there. Once you have the tank in gallons, you can easily figure out what you can keep in there. Good Luck!
