Well its been about 3 days now and my trout is eating colorbits. hes about 10 inches and in with smaller cichlids. water temp is set at 70. everything i read says thats just about tops with trout. so far mine is doing good and eating. me and my buddy went ice fishing saturday cause we eat them and i decided to try one in the tank. i used sat and sun to bring water temp up to room temp 68 degrees and then i did a cold water change in the tank to bring it down to 68 and then i added trout and heater brought it back to 70. i could turn heater off but i want it at minimum 70 for my cichlids. so far trout seems healthy.

Lon term your trout won't be happy. They like all conditions that cichlids don't - well, other than space, that is.

here it is. we caught 6 between the two of us but this was the smallest. im hoping he can stay healthy like he seems now but if notice something not going right i will take him out.

Sweet. I love native fish in the hobby (although sometimes unlawful). Don't eat it if it is in a tank that was treated with malacite green.

There are ideal conditions to keep Rainbow trout.....

Bu tthen again there are many ideal ways of keeping many different kind of fish but it doesn't mean that the fish wont live if its not tip top shape.

I am pretty sure that if your Rainbow trout is eating and living well and does not develop any type of diseases from till a month , then you pretty much have a new pet.

Dont listen to what people tell you that , "Its not a suitable aquarium pet" I've had friends who kept Brown and Rainbow in a 200 gallon tank and they lived just fine without all that crap about "water currents and a chiller and all this BS"

:naughty:

200 gallon is a nice size tank for trout and I'm curious about your friends experience with captive trout. How many trout did these guys keep in a 200 and at what size did they get them? What temps were the tanks and did they take special measures to assure high oxygen levels? How many years did these guys keep them?

As far as "crap" about water chillers and current....No one has mentioned a chiller or current in this thread. What are your thoughts on current and temp....Is 80 OK? Do you need any filtration with trout? What minimum size tank do you suggest for them?

Looks cool, long term I not sure it will do well.

I may be wrong, but I beleive the only place rainbow trout is native to, is Germany.

ya i have a mag drive in there with a hose hooked to it so its like a superpowerhead. if things change for the worse then ill take him out and add him to our freezer fish. trout perch crappie. we have a fish fry every summer.

Rainbows are native to the far Western US. Brown trout are native to Europe.
