I've kept Green and Gold in the past but never Red-Spotted. There's quite a few starting to filter through into the lfs's now from anything between £8 to £35 each for 3-5" and I've got my eye on proper good looker which I'll hopefully be getting in a few weeks time to add to my poly/dat/ctenopoma tank (bichir is new at only 4" btw).

Are they more like the greens in temperament etc or are they closer to the gold? I'm guessing the gold but thought I'd ask all the same (the greens have always been a bit more argumentative than the golds in my experience, and more prone to trashing plants too).

Are they more demanding with water quality or anything? And do they display the extensive pattern/colour-changing like the greens do? Any advice appreciated thanks...

It's just a Gold Severum with more accentuated red in the face and scales.

In my experience what you've outlined as different between gold and green behaviour is correct, except for the love for plants as my Greens don't touch them. Golds colours don't vary much at all whereas Greens can fade between cream and black depending on mood, and I imagine reds are the same. Soft water and plenty of vegetables in their diet with good tank maintenance and they'll be fine.

my gold used to get a bit of orange spotting around the face when she was coloured up but other than that remained the same colour all the time. She too loved trashing any plants that weren't rooted well but the two greens I've ever kept have absolutely TROUNCED them - even moreso than my silver dollars ever did!

So are the red-spotted's just a selective hybrid derived from golds or do they have a more complicated breeding history than that? when I used to keep my severums about 15 years ago there were just golds and greens around and that was it - but now there's quite a few - 'red-spotted', 'red headed', 'wild turquise' etc (which I imagine to be the most narky of the bunch?)...

No idea on the genetics, they're just genetically bred to be very vivid varients of Gold Severum males.

the red spotted were actually the original strain if im correct, all so called "regular gold severums" are just washed out/ in bred

I just purchased my first red spotted severum and I love it. Well behaved with my rainbows. Paid $36.00 and well worth it. It is about 3" and has adapted very well. I have a 55 gallon tank. Looking forward to watching him grow.
