total novice here but longtime fish enthusiast and diver. forgive me if this a ridiculous question or if it has been answered elsewhere, but does anyone keep large tanks with saltwater bait fish such as sardines or similar? i imagine this might be too hard for a home project but, then again, i never thought i'd see some of the amazing tanks i've seen on this forum! thoughts? this is something i've dreamt about but wasnt even sure if its possible...

I have done it in a quarantine tank at the lab where I used to work. They lasted for a month until we decided to add some groupers. We kept scaled sardines. It's totally possible, but they need to eat often (more than once per day) and don't do well with many tankmates. They probably also have short lifespans. The most difficult part seems to be catching and transporting them unharmed. After that they take to frozen food very quickly!

I havent ever heard of it...they would be colder water than most people have...but there are coldwater tanks.

Feeding might be an issue because they filter feed on phytoplankton.

thanks fleshy, my dream is to have a large tank with a large number of small shoaling baitfish. any ideas on alternate species? many thanks in advance!
