Swimmin' with the fishes
I've always wanted a sturgeon. They're one of my favorite fish by far, but seeing as I just moved to Phoenix, I feel like it's kind of not an option. However, reading through some threads on here I noticed there are some (shovelnose, stertlet) that stay smaller and can tolerate warmer temperatures.

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 425g (8'x3'x3') that's going to house minimum: RTC & RTCxTSN. Once they get big enough, we're thinking of putting our 2 indo dats and tire track eel in there and possibly getting some peacock bass as well.

So here's my question: Since it get so hot around here, I'm not too worried about the tropical fish dealing with the heat. I'm going to drop a couple huge airstones in the tank to make sure it stays well oxygenated, especially in the summer. So that will take care of the high oxygen needs of a sturgeon, but what about the temperature? This tank will probably be in my den, so it will be air conditioned to probably around 80-82 in the summer. Would a shovelnose or stertlet sturgeon be okay at such temperatures? More importantly, would it get along with the catfish? Or rather, they get along with it?

Feel free to tell me this is a horrible idea. Like I said, it's a dream fish to have, and I'm fine waiting until I move up north to get an acre pond and drop in a couple white sturgeon. But it's always nice to make dreams come true sooner than later. :)

Sturgeon can actually do well in warmer temperatures with good aeration, but the Problem is that without a good cool down in winter their lifespan is shortened greatly.

Well thats both good and bad news. Seeing as it does get cold during the winter at night, would letting the temp in the tank drop to around 70 help? I wouldn't want to drop it much lower than that because of the amazonian fish, but I would feel bad shortening an animals lifespan because of something as simple as temperature.

What about compatibility with the catfish?

For a sterlet or another of the Eurasian species, rather not, but if you manage to get your hands on a shovelnose (difficult!) that could work. As for compatibility - as long as the cats can't eat the sturgeon you will not have problems. Just keep in mind that both sturgeon and the other species you intend to keep get huge, and then even an 8x3x3 gets to its limits.

Not sure about the surgeon temp but keep it as cool as possible. As for tropicals, don't worry, I'm still not heating my peaceful community and it's temp is around 68 and all the fish are doing great (angelfish, gourami, acara, Molly, Corys, Ancistrus, and bb cat).

Oh I'm well aware the species I have will outgrow the tank. But right now they're in a snap pool. So the tank will give them a longer home to give me enough time to either dig a pond. And they won't be in a crappy pool

If you can get a shovelnose then your temps won't be a problem but feeding them might be, sturgeon can be easily out competed for food by more aggressive feeders. That would be my main concern...
