How is everybody keeping their tanks cool in there garage. I am in va and it is starting to get hot here. Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Maybe a small air conditioner? or maybe a chiller for aquariums, but if i'm not mistaken; there pretty pricey?

What is your tank temp unless it is over 89 degrees I think you are panicking. My temp are up there a little right now 82-88 and I am not even giving it a thought.

My apartment (top floor) absorbs a lot of heat in the summer time, making it feel like 100 degrees in here, which made the tank temps rise to 92 on its worst day. Next day I found a used chiller on craigslist and hooked it up. Now the tank never goes over the preset 86 degrees for my warm water discus fish. The chiller came with a temp controller which controls both the heater element and the chiller, so if in the winter it gets too cold, it will turn on the heater. Great device. Can't see living without it...now that I think about it, neither could my fish.
Also it was less than half the price of a new one.
Good luck.

For most tropical freshwater fish I wouldn't be too concerned as long as the rise in temperature was gradual and plenty of dissolved oxygen available. I have had tanks up to 89 degrees for weeks on end and 95 for days on end and all the fish were fine. These are obviously not ideal temps, but most tropical freshwater fish are pretty hardy if the rest of your other water parameters are in check. If your still concerned, a chiller for the tank is better than using an AC for the room.
