I was thinking of setting up a cold water (room temp) tank to see if i could keep some native (speckled) trout. Does anyone have any input on this? ,,,i think that maybe they need cooler water,,,but was thinking if i got then small enough and used cold water from the tap and let the water warm to room temp slowly that they may have a chance ? ! I have caught these fish in mid summer in water temps of the mid 70's

A temp in the mid 70's won't work for trout, I would aim for something in the 50's or 60's. You may catch them in warm weather but you have to remember that the water is colder then the air, and even colder deeper down. At room temp I would recommend some other kind of native. LMB, bullhead, sunfish, perch...there are a lot that can survive at room temp.

i think u would be alright if u could get the tank below 65. also u have to remember that cold water holds more oxygen same goes with fast moving water so that is probaly y they can live in the higher temps of your local stream.

I think you may be wrong sandtiger,,,ive caught trout in very small ponds 3 feet deep and the water was mid 70's EASY,,,,cant see why they would'nt survive in my basement in water that is arond 70

i once had a tank with 4 juvenile rainbow trout. water temp in low 70s i used a big powerhead to simulate a river. they did very well in those conditions. hope that helps a little. very interesting to watch.

If you already know than why are you asking? ;)

Do it if you want, I personally don't think a temp in the 70's is good for the long term health of a trout. A wild ecosystem differs a lot from an aquarium. For what it's worth, I worked at a trout hatchery for brooks, rainbows, browns, tiger and chinook salmon and we kept the water in the 50s.

I agree that they would do much better in cool water, was just wondering if it would be at all possible,,,thx for your imput !

If you catch your specimens make sure you don't make them bleed!!!! Or they will just die on you!! & Good luck!

Its possible, but keep temps low. If you set it up, post pics and let me know how it goes. A friend and I are looking into doing a large trout tank in his basement, so Im sure i am gonna have alot of questions considering I have no experience with native fish. Good luck!!!

You should go to the movie lounge and find this guy with a vid of some trout he was feeding. He told me his water temp was around 65 degrees with no problem. You should really try to get in contact with him if your serious about these fish since this guy is having success with them.
