I recently upgraded to a 400 gal. Right now I have a silver aro, florida gar, redtail cat, and a farmie peacock bass. I was considering getting another cichla. The one I have now is around 6-7 inches... Not sure if it's male or female. Can I safely add another cichla? I've heard that it's best to keep them in larger groups so aggression is spread out over more than one individual. I'm also concerned if they both ended up being males, what would happen then? If it could work, what species can I try? Right now I'm looking at a kelberi, azul, or temensis. I could use some advice or tips.

you will be fine to add another cichla, if it was me I would add a few more. They seem to do better in groups. From my experience I do not think that cichla are all that aggressive at all when compared to other cichlids. They have massive appetites and grow large, but I wouldn't consider them aggressive. I have a 10'x4' tank at home which has around 15 cichla of all the different varieties and believe it or not, I have a Geo in the tank and the geo chases the bass around, and my biggest bass is a 30" temensis!

Pbass are predatory, not hyper-territorial bruisers. I also suggest getting a group. Whichever you get, make sure they are about the same size as your guy. I would not go smaller than 5 inches, and no bigger than 9 inches. They will try to each others if there is a big enough size difference. Azuls will top out in growth at about the same size, if not a bit larger, than farmies, ~2 feet. Kels stay a bit smaller, but will be okay. Temensis will get much larger, but it'll be a while.

Keep odd numbers 3 minimum for a group. Every time someone only has two one gets beat.
