Ok, so fist, i have 3 orinos that i got from john (snookn21) that are roughly about 7-8" and a fl spotted gar thats roughly 11" at most now. so my question is, my lps guy n me have gotten to be good friends, hes a fish nerd like myself, hes got more tanks and more fish then i can name, so i trust him with orders. he knows how the kelberi is my unicorn and about ran outa breath tellin me he had them on his order list for the store. the rep for the fish dealer says the are columbian wild caught kelberi's and they look amazing, and at 8" (large size) he can cut me a deal at 300$ each, which is saving over $120 per fish at the stores normal price, is this a good price or good idea? i want 2, makin my school a total of 5, but will the orinos get along with the new members or show agression to the new guys? i need input from you other pbass lovers out there..this will be my most expensive 2 fish if i do this, so im plannin ahead and makin sure its a good to go sichiation. thanks n advance!

If they are worth it to you and you have the money then go for it. As far as the aggression, its almost guranteed. Question is who goes after who. The cichlas will flare and head dive at each other but its normal. Its a herichy and every cichla has a place on the ladder. There will be times where every cichla minds its own business and times where they might go at it. But good luck and dont forget to post some pics if you do get them.

yea i understand that, it comes down to the want verse need mainly i guess, but my biggest thing is with my orinos groin more n more i know the longer i wait the more the kelberi's will cost and that sucks. so in the long run im saving myself money right?! (this is me trying to justify it to myself i think) and yea i know what u mean about the hierarchy issue, i was hoping thats all it would be, my orinos do it, but they've been together so long its more or less been figured out. i guess my main question thats left is the $300 per fish a deal at 8"+- for the w/c kelberi's..

Well, wild caught prices are supposed to keep going up, so you do have a bit of a point there, lol. I'd still be worried that they're actually kelberi. What river did he say they're from? The price is up to you, but just make sure they're wild kelberi and not Bahia kels or another species. And, yeah, they'll have to readjust the pecking order, but they don't usually kill each other.

officially i was told they are columbian wild caught, so that as of now is all i know. and yes as i said before, im checkin all bases from price back to origin if they truly are the wc kelberi's..althought id love them no matter what because i love my pbass, but i dont wanna pay for a Mercedes and get a honda, you know what i mean? lol

With the sudden influx in bahia kelberi there has been a few cases of people selln bahia as wc kelberi. If im not mistaken kelberi are from brazil...not columbia. If they are wild $300 for an 8in kelberi isnt a bad price. Try and get a location point on them.

That's not bad at all. I paid 400 shipped for my cb bah at 8 inches. Instant gratification. I don't like buying kelberi young because they often don't develop until they are around 12. I've seen people trade kelberis they though were duds turn into some real nice fish

This....

As for paying that much for a Kelberi, It's total up to you. I'd ask are for kelberi's. There are a couple of Rapps batches for sale right now...$250 and we all know they are wild because they all came from Rapps. Me personally, My NEED to get list includes Rio Negro Orino's, 24k Cearas and Sao Francisco Kelberi's. And believe me, I'd be more them happy to drop a pretty penny easy on one of these fish. But, I'd hate to pay $300 duckets for a tem.

As for comparability, pretty chill all around, keep good size dithers in the tank with them. Servums, tin foil barbs, Geo's and so on. My orino's were never bullies to my kelberi.

Kelberis are from Brazil so I would be a little skeptical. See if you will be able to purchase them after viewing. If they are kelberis like he says than there shouldn't be any problems. You don"t want to pay 300 for some monos or orinos at 8", you will be getting robbed. Also, If they are bahias, I would refuse them as well. (pm if your going to go through with it and I will give the run down of characteristics to look for to distinguish a bahia.) We need to boycott these Bahias as they are ruining the horizon of seeing wild kelberis back in the trade. They aren't any cheaper, they're easy for our vendors to obtain and people are still buying them at high price and large quantities. Look at the captive raised azuls, they weren't $300 a pop like the wild guys, they were only $100. These kelberis should be more along the lines of $50. They're not rare, everyone has them and there easy to obtain and are now on most LFS stock list for purchase .

Not to rain on his parade, but the same guy told me he could get wild caught kelberi's at 3". I asked at that size how they could tell 100% if it was kelberi and not mono or orino. He said they are easily distinguished if you know what to look for, even at the 2-3" mark. Sound fishy to anyone else?
