I was at the store earlier today and noticed that they had a sale on a cichlid looking fish labeled as "kennyl." I did a fishbase search and came up empty. Does anyone know what species this is? Thanks

Thanks, I'm not familiar with cichlids. Based on all of the sites I can find, the store was only selling females (blue with dark stripes). If I see a male next time, I'll get a pair!

they change colors some of the blue will turn yellow. (males)

Kenyi (Psuedotropheous Lombardoi). A staple of the African Cichlid world.

Buy three or four, the dominant one will turn male within a few weeks. They ALL start out female. Cichlid gender is determined by thier physical traits (big strong dominant ones turn male, small subordinate ones turn female) as opposed to most animals that are born one gender or another and have thier physical traits determined by thier gender (like humans for example!). Interesting stuff...eh?

Anyhow...just get a small group (4-6) the biggest will turn male and they will breed like wildfire. One of the easiest Mbuna to breed IME. Do use caution they are pretty aggressive (even for Mbuna).

Good Luck!

Not true. Kenyi/Lombardoi do not change sex. All are born either female or male, but all have the blue color. Males later turn orange.

African cichlids do not keep stable pairs and are best kept 1 male to every 3-4 females. May I ask what size tank? I wouldnt put a group of Kenyi in anything smaller than a 55. They are aggressive fish and should only be kept with other africans of similar size.

Well you are entitled to your opinion but from what I've read cichlids in general are extremly gender dynamic. They are born asexual and choose thier gender based on whats most adventageous to them based on size and dominance (a smaller weaker fish has a better chance of survival and reproduction if it is female, a larger, tougher fish can spread it's DNA further by becoming male.). Its proven in a few species and assumed in most others. Read the book "Cichlid Fishes: Natures Grand Experiment in Evolution" by George W. Barlow, it goes over this in detail. Unless perhaps this is outdated information? Feel free to show me some proof I'm wrong.

Also - I've had the joy of maintaining a group of 24+ lombardoi at work and gotten to see the gender dynamics first hand. Even in mature specimens, when the largest males left the tank, sure enough a few more would turn orange. Moreover, I've also seen large mature males turn back to blue when another male becomes more dominant.

On the keeping Kenyi, get me the pics to prove it. From your myspace it looks like you are into American cichlids.

As for the "sex change": 100 percent false. Why dont you get me some proof? Ask anyone that knows anything about african cichlids and they will tell you that you are wrong. Dont tell me what I already know.

Ummm...read the book I suggested? Theres your "proof." Anyway thats what I'm basing this whole thing on and I don't claim to be a cichlid guru so now I'm really interested in whether I'm full of crap or not....

Any "real" cichlid experts want to chime in on this?

what do you want pictures of? varying ratios of orange and blue fish? what would that prove?
