i recently setup a 77 gallon malawi tank containing 12- 2" kenyi and now im curious to know what other people think i should add next. for filtration i have a marineland c530 and an ac70. my thoughts are that i would do 12 demasoni but the females i think look to much alike then possibly johanni, or red top afra or cobue. let me hear your thoughs and ideas. in the end id like to have 3 different types if atall possible

a 77G tank with all kenyi?
Better have LOTS of escape places.
I hope for your sake there's only one male & all the rest females. kenyi all start out with blue female color. males mature into yellow, so you may not know for a while. subdominant males can stay blue for long time to avoid being targeted.
I know nothing about tankmates that work for them. very few males play nicely.
Mine is a psycho stalker of other fish. but awesome wet-pet for the size! he has to be divided from tankmates. I didn't know what my hubby brought home. no african setup.
If I were in your shoes, I'd start removing all males except the first yellow one. He'll be dominant. Then let him have all females. He would have a nice harem & aggression would be dispersed so he won't pester them to death. Lots of hidey holes for the girls, where he can't always see them.
My male likes his own personal cave. I'd like to get him a large tank w/all girls.

i think what ive decided on is to add 12 gallireya reef long pelvic, ive kept then in the past and they to are quite aggresive but what im hoping is to get 2 males and 6 females from all the different types i add and possibly over stock to keep down on the agression. to answer your question, yes there is quite a few hiding spots and ill only be adding more when i add more fish. elongotis is another opion i looked at thanks for you input and keep it coming

I googled the specie you named and it is labeled with some variation of words.
However IMHO, if I am seeing the same fish you want, that appearance will bring intense aggression from both sides. The fish is very similar to adolescent kenyi: mostly the blue of females, but starting to develop the yellow of males.
It looks much like my kenyi's "unidentified" tankmate, which I assumed was a hybrid.
Granted, overstocking can work. but you need DISsimilar looking fish if your intention is to reduce aggression.
How long is your tank?

I believe my thoughts are correct. but I hope PPL who use over-stocking with mbuna will look at the species and comment.

+1 petspoiler.

Exactly the fish I thought.
Don't get that kind unless you like fish soup.
Find something neither blue, nor yellow. Also, I believe that dark vertical barring is like waving the proverbial red flag in front of a bull.
^Those are 3 things to avoid^

I think you just helped me identify my fish, which I thought was a hybrid. Lovely little guy. but nowhere near an aggression match for male kenyi.

............. Also try melonachromis auratus.

I would go with the the 2nd species^ if you use one of those,
based solely on appearance being totally different than kenyi. I have no behavioral experience with them.
