So I recently acquired a 55 gallon tank on Craigslist. Gave it a thorough cleaning, cycled it and it is ready for fish. I ordered 6-1.5" juvenile keyhole cichlids with the intention of getting a breeding pair and rehoming the other four. I thought long and hard about whether I wanted Bolivian rams or keyhole cichlids before I decided on keyholes. My question is, can I keep a breeding pair of keyholes and a breeding pair of Bolivian rams in the 55 together? The tank is heavily planted as I know both species enjoys the hiding space and lower currents. Even with enough hiding space, will these fish be too cramped to breed at the same time? So of course the keyholes are staying, but I feel like the tank will be a bit empty with just 2 breeding fish and that is all. Any hel or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

I think that your chances are pretty good. I have never kept keyholes but hear they are pretty chill so best way to find out is just give it a try. Do it soon though so they can grow up together.

I Have kept these together ...but not breeding ...good chance it will work:)

I have been doing a bit of reading. I read a few posts on several rams being kept with a couple of keyholes. Could I increase the number of rams to 4 or 5 with a breeding pair of keyholes?

in a 55 I would think its do-able ,but you probably have to keep a close eye on it.....young keyholes are a little fragile......and rams can get a bit bossy ....once both are established you should be ok

Okay, so maybe I should wait to add rams until a few weeks after the keyholes are settled?

I got them in today! Cute little buggers. They have been hiding all day since I let them out of their bag. Everyone arrived alive, though one looks a little sickly. Hopefully a quiet night and the fresh water will help perk him back up. I would post pics if I could get my damn camera to work. :(
