Hi i just saw some keyhole cichlids at my lfs, and they looked kinda cool. does anyone have this type of fish, if so tell about them, and post up a pic or two maybe. I read a bit on them, just wanted fist hand, personalities, size , temperment....ect.

I have one in a 29gal with some tetras, clown pleco and 5 various cory cats and 2 aussie rainbows. Mine is still shy - very docile- havent seen any agression toward the tankmates. But I don't have a 2nd keyhole to see how the conspecific aggro is. I wish I had a decent camera to show you mine, its grown maybe an inch in a summer now. I feed spirulina flakes, cichlid crisps and veggie crisps, frozen mysis shrimp, cyclops, white worms and blood worms. But like I said a very shy fish that requires dithers, low light and plants (I just use fake ones cos I am cheap lol).

They're not very aggro at all, even toward conspecifics. They give a chase now and then while breeding but stress easily IMO so any keyhole getting picked on, be it by another keyhole or any other type of fish, should be relieved of stress and moved or have the aggressor moved.
I have 2 in my 29 and have kept several others before these two. No telling yet on whether they're male/female or same sex but they get along fine and seem to prefer one another's company. I've had them for almost a year now. No breeding behavior.
They are typically shy and dithers definitely help if you'd like to see them often. Not very picky about what they'll eat. Soft to neutral water's best but I've kept all mine in moderately hard water with no issues.

I have two of them in a 150 g together with discus. One about 4" and one about 2". They won't touch your plants and mine shoal together with the discus. No agression at al.

ya they look and sound like a great community fish, they look nice too.

Yeh as everyone has said very calm fish, no agro at all really, go well with a community IMO. Dont get much bigger than 4 inches if that. Different looking but very attractive at the same time.

I would really like to get a pair of these for my 29. They are a peaceful community cichlid (like the ram, apisto, etc.).
