How to get carbonate hardness up?

Baking soda is totally safe. I use it to raise my ph. Coryloach baking soda raises your kh and ph.

Just make sure you get plain old baking soda. No scents or anti caking agents. Most people swear by arm and hammer. I've been using some off brand in a brown box at my local dollar store for the past couple years.

I know this has minimal effect, but I also keep cuttlebones in my tank at all time now. A medium bone melts away in a month. My snails will nibble on it as well.

Baking soda is the cheapest and any plain, food-grade stuff should work. We even use industrial grade in the systems at work. Raises KH and pH but at a slower rate than soda ash. Thats why baking soda is better for freshwater. There are also products you can buy such as pH Up which has carbonate in it.

I meant baking soda won't increase the KH....And I was thinking baking powder, not baking soda, lol :)

Yeah baking powder won't. Baking soda will. It is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and KH is carbonate hardness. It adds carbonate anions to the water. GH is the concentration of divalent cations such as calcium and magnesium.
