kill good bacteria

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not from what i was told

There are quite a few good UV threads here lately...

But in conclusion to the question here...

A UV light will (potentiall) kill any living organism (including bacteria) that passes through it...

"Beneficial Bacteria" (AOBs & NOBs) that we rely on 'grow on surfaces' as opposed to being free floating.

During the early stages of establishing an aquarium I would discourage the use of a UV light. This is to allow bacteria to form (on surfaces), become dislodged and take hold elsewhere in the tank. Once a tank is 'mature' meaning bacteria is established throughout the system, then a UV light holds no threat to distubring the bacterial balance in the tank.

Thanks, thats what someone at LFS told me, I should wait before going to UV. My new tank is only a month old

i ran my uv after 1 month. 8 hours a day. didnt notice anything as far as killing bb.

In an ideal situation, you will want 'beneficial bacteria' on surfaces throughout your system...

Having a UV in line between your filter and your tank will prevent 'beneficial bacteria' from breaking loose from your filters media and migrating to your tank.

Thus having a UV inline between your filter and your tank will in no way disrupt the bacteria in your filter, it will just inhibit it from migrating throughout your system.
