About a year ago I purchased a used 55 Gallon with what the owner had advertised as a "Large Parrot Fish" off of a local classified site. When I saw the ad I initially thought Blood Parrot though, after seeing the fish It's clear to me that she isn't a BP, she has a properly functioning mouth, nor does she have the BP's characteristic deformed spine. So what is she? I was thinking King Kong, or maybe convict bp cross? but I don't know enough about non-blood parrot-parrots to say for certain and would love if someone else could give me their opinion. She's 7 inches long, and a bit on the aggressive side, I had my hand in the tank rearranging some things and she bit me!

Here's some pictures of the pretty girl :)

The main reason I'm so curious to know what she is, is that despite how beautiful she is, I had a plan for the 55 when I bought it, and feel that she's not going to work too well, so (with much heartache) I've decided to re-home her as I really don't want to sacrifice what I've been working on just for this one fish. I just don't want to falsely advertise her and somebody end up getting something they weren't expecting.

Another question, how much would she be worth? No idea what I should list her for.

Thanks guys!
Yeah, I never expected her to get me like that, guess I've learnt my lesson about rearranging her territory lol.

Any ideas on what she'd be worth? I'm not too pleased about re-homing her

Hey Animal Guy or Riftraft... Since we are here to learn, what made you guys say king kong parrot. Was it her color or the fact that she can close her mouth and BITE!? Lol. I ask because I have a bp as rich as this ones color but it of corse has the triangular mouth.

I don't have as much knowledge about KK or BP's as Animal Guy or Riftraft, but I can give you my observation.
I don't think it's as much about colour, as it is about shape and size, at least, that's what originally tipped me off to her being something other than a BP. (coupled with the fact she can close her mouth, but I don't think that alone is a sole give-away)

IME, "Real" Blood Parrots have a more 'exaggerated' shape (deformed spine and beak shaped head) than the King Kongs (which seem to have more gradual slopes/regular shaped bodies) if you get what I mean?
I have a BP in with her that is just as rich coloured as her, maybe even more so, but he's got the deformed mouth and spine and to me, that what makes him a BP.

I should also mention that the reason I don't believe mouth function is a sole way to differentiate the two, is that I've also seen "real" Blood Parrots with fully functioning mouths, but they still had the deformed body shape that only really seems to be characteristic of a BP.

I've attached some pictures of my KK next to my BP so you can compare their shape (I apologize for the bad quality I don't have the best camera.)

I hope that made some amount of sense, I look forward to hearing what Animal Guy and Riftraft have to say on the matter!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

My opinion on what you call them is Size.

I learned that mouth does not confirm because I've already seen ones that prove it. Even ones with certificates from Happybreed have triangle mouths.

There are millions that differ within their mix and range.

The rich red is the parrot's signature imo. You can breed a BP to Midas and get a few Large parrot looking fish but it will not have the signature red. U get orange.

Since you guys like parrots, I learned their history reading on the internet from a old parrot site on how to grade and tell, that parrots were purposely bred for that deformity. They wanted the triangle smiley mouth. Not like most ppl in the FH hobby of today. Triangle mouth was an important part of grading. Like FH hump.

I like smiley mouth too but just a lil bit and not crooked and creepy. It adds a lot of character to the fish. It's their thing. Hate the dented head and wide open mouths.
Your parrot looks young still.
