BACKSTORY
10 or so years ago the LFS owners hubby died and she closed down the majority of the tanks as she is NOT a fish person. He had a largish display tank (55g?) with a 12" Knife &10" Oscar in it - no idea of their age. Knife is a fish I have always wanted & I have loved every Oscar I've owned (they are truly the dogs of the fish world as far as personality goes). I am assuming their tank was sold as when I went in one day they were living in a Rubbermaid bin. I took both home and gave them each a 40g of their own - largest I had or could afford at the time.
PRESENT DAY
Lost Oscar 4 years ago to Hole in the Head(maybe old age?) Knife is still going strong. Knife(named appropriately Henkel) lives solo in a 70g/48" long as he has killed every other fish ever put in with him (3 plecos) I keep the tank lighting subdued as I was told it was what he would prefer (only increasing it at feeding) and a few tall plastic plants to provide cover. He has never shown any interest in exploring his tank, seems to prefer sulking in the back except at feeding time or when he would hunt down his tank mates and with it being 48"long he could swim around in it if he so desired.
FINALLY
My question is, I could possibly move him to a 100g when I move my tanks upstairs which would increase the height of his tank but not the length but is there any point aa he never uses the space he has now? I would rehome him but the few times I have tried there has been little legitimate interest shown (I've asked perspective buyers about their fish experience & pics of tanks and received nothing) & due to his age - I am guessing 13/14+ - I am not sure how much longer he has. Any input is welcome

What specie of Knife is it?

What kind of knife are we talking? I'm assuming black ghost.

My 2c is he probably doesnt have enough cover to feel comfy being out or has a bright light. If it's a black ghost the 70g would be fine if you keep your water quality on point if not the 100g would dilute the water some more between what your doing now.

If it gets any bigger I personally would put it in a bigger tank.

I wouldn't bother upgrading for height, they don't really use the height. The fish is 14 years old, it's not growing any more. Probably stunted from living in too small of a tank for so long, but hey, at this point not much you can do.
