I recently adopted a 5" clown knife with one eye from petco. It did not seem to have any diseases, and i was careful not to mix the petco water in with mine. THe fish is doing well, but there is just a smooth silver hole where the eye would have been. is this a birth defect? P.S. its name is one-eyed jack.

It's perfectly fine, the eyes don't always grow back, and it probably wont as it seems to have already grown over. not a birth defect, some other fish probably pecked it out.

are you kidding- "the eyes dont always grow back" are you serious?

Agree :) I've seen fins, scales, muscles, and even piranha lips bitten off that grew back. But when the eye is gone, it's gone for good. The silver hole you see is normal, the fish will live well all his life without the eye.

hehe whoops, sounded a bit wierd. sorry.
I thought for sure that i'd read somewhere if a fish looses half an eye or something the lost half can partially regenerate but without sight. Hmmm.

I'll look around, sorry for the confusion.

i had a gold fish that its eye got eaten in one of my tanks it swam around in circls for food when it died it was in a half circle shape because of its swiming but it live for 5 years with that so i say a clown knife will be fine plus they use smell to find food to so not much impact

clown knifes dont need sight to navigate their environment

smell does play a part, but clown knifes rely on a self generated electro-magnetic force field to navigate and hunt in their surrounding environment

and i kid you not :naughty:

I thought that applied to BGKs and not CKs......learn something everyday!:D
