Quick question could I keep a brown ghost knife or an African Brown knife fish with 2 4 peaceful inch cichlids some corydoras and some medium sized tetras in a tank which measures 36in by 12in by 18in.

Brown knife for sure. The bgk is ok but will need an upgrade if that’s the final tank ur planning.

I've never seen a bgk max out at under a foot. You need a bigger tank for it, as it would grow to large for the tank, and it would likely snack on the tetras in such a small space. The larger tank would give the bgk more space, along with giving more space to separate the tetras and knifefish, making them less likely to cross paths.

It’ll be good for a while. Bgks have a varied growth rate but still slow overall. So some years are available before deciding. Since they are captive bred now I’m sure this has affected it as well to a degree.

You’re good with the African brown knives.

I am talking about a brown ghost knife which maxes out at about 11" in the wild and 6-8" in captivity.

Forgot about the other brown knife, apteronotus leptorhynchus. They will need a hiding spot by should be fine as well. Will get about 8-9in in most home aquariums. Can keep a few together w/o problems. Similar to the African knives in feeding and care. Either way you go it should be a good and interesting tank.
