Me thinks my knight goby killed my puffer. It was a small puffer, and his carcass was discovered in the goby's hiding spot. Does this sound plausable? I think I may need to find the Goby another home so that I can get a new GSP.

They do need a large tank because it is not unheard of them being territorial. Did you introduce them together or was one a new addition?

They were both in there together for a while. I recently (yesterday) added a mono and a scat. The next morning, the GSP was done. My LFS will give me credit for him, so I may trade him in and get another scat or a new GSP. I miss the GSP already.

First off, how new is this tank? Did the puffer show signs of attack on his body?

Only reason I ask is because if you recently bought a GSP from a shop, they always seem very underfed and sometimes die naturally (lost one after about a month from this).

Assuming that isn't the case, I kinda doubt it was your knight goby. Are you sure it wasn't from your Mono? Mine has always been a PITA to my archers, so I wouldn't really put it past him. My GSPs don't really bother with him though, so idk.

GSPs are lots of fun to have! Make sure if you get another, get one that seems bigger and not skinny behind his head. They should look kinda like a tear drop rougly from the top, sometimes they are too skinny and their heads look kinda huge comparitively. Just something to look for if you plan on owning another.

it was probably the mono. they can get a bit nippy, especially if theyre on their own. they should idealy be with a shoal (at least 6) of thier own kind. puffers are also really fussy when it comes to water quality. not saying your water is crap, but puffers are rediculously messy fish and have a huge bioload for thie size. maybe the addition of the mono and the scat has pushed your tank bioload too far, and something had to give. unfortunately it was your puffer.

did he have a black stomach before he died? as this is a sign of stress in this species of pufferfish. GSP's have a habit of telling you when theyre unhappy or stressed. when the lights come on. when new fish are added. even when (in my case) ive been away from the tank for too long.

i use my puffer to keep an eye on my water quallity. if he's had a black belly for more than a few hours, i check using the test kit to make sure. after a day with a black belly i do a WC. especially if i havent done one for a while.

i dont think your knight goby was the culprit. i find GSP much more aggressive and will attack the knight goby if the goby was all by itself free to attack. Maybe it was the new fish that either beating up the puffer or just bioload went up to fast.

my knight gobies are big babies and live in harmony with everything

The GSP did not have a black belly. He seemed fine the day before. He was not skinny and was eating well. I had if for three or four months.

My water quality is fine. It is difficult to keep it that way (I spend much time trying to keep the nitrates in check).

Interestingly, I didn't realy see bite marks on him. Sounds like I judged the knight goby to quick.

I have two monos. How large a tank do I need to add more of them? The big one let the GSP push him around. It was kinda cute.

I plan on getting another GSP. I'm thinking I should wait until I get a bigger tank. I'm currently looking for a 120+ that I can put a wet/dry and a fuge under. I have someone who is supposed to get back to me this weekend. Wish me luck.

how big is the tank you have now. GSPs should have a minimum of 30gal each. monos get big, 10"+ i think. for a shoal you need a pretty substantial tank. even with the fish you have there would still be quite a bioload. i guess you just exeeded it. no worries, sh*t happens...

deffo get another puffer when you have the room though. my gsp is one of the best fish i have owned. so much personality for such a little feller.

and good luck on the new tank.

It seems that the new tank is most likely going to be a 110. If I go with the 110, can I add the puffer to the scat and 2 monos? Will I be able to add anything else after that? I'm going to have to move the tank to salt for the guys I already have, so I figured maybe I would add a relatively peaceful SW fish or 2
