2 piranhas were dropped off at the shelter a week ago. No one really knows what to do with them(they are available for adoption). I figured since I know a good amount about fish care I would step up to take care of them.

I don't know a lot about this species though. I know feeders are generally bad for them and the staff has been trying to feed them minnows but they aren't eating. I have some catfish fillet in my freezer along with some frozen krill and blood worms. Do you think they would take to it? Can I just throw it in? Will they eat it if it falls to the bottom?

Right now they are in a 29 gallon with a good amount of cover. They are very shy, I have no idea what the parameters are. I'm going to take a bucket, siphon and my test kit up there with me. Not to sound silly but is there a chance of getting bit while cleaning the tank?

do you know what kind of piranha are those? I would guess red bellies but it could be other types too.
how big are then? catfish fillet is fine, as long as it's not processed.
if they are new to the tank they may not eat for a few days and they may not eat when there's people around. piranhas are skittish so it could take some time before they start eating in front of you. try to feed when there will be no one around if they still won't eat.
shouldn't get bite while cleaning the tank, most likely they'll be hiding at the other side of the tank. just keep an eye on them if you worry about it.

Thanks, they are red bellies as far as I can tell. They are about 4-5 inches long. Not full grown but a good size.

It was a typo geeze. As you can clearly see in the first sentence I spelled it right. By the time I realized the typo I couldn't change it.

Thanks for your useful and helpful post :headshake

Thanks you!

I hope the eat soon. I'm also going to post on my fish club forum to see if someone with fish experience will adopt them.

have you already posted an add in the mfk marketplace? might be able to unload them pretty quickly there too

also post on piranha-fury.com, will probably go fast if they are free.
