We are just about to finish digging our pond, when it's all finished i plan on having koi. When winter comes in Iowa, will my koi die? I'm thinking about adding an ice melter, to keep a hole in the ice. People have said that if it doesn't freeze solid the koi won't die. Is this total lies or will I be ok? I live in DES moines Iowa.

How many gallons and how deep? They can live under ice.

7x10x2.5 or so, different depths. The liner is 14x14 i would like to go deeper but i don't think I can with this liner

That's only 1300 gallons or less. You may have some trouble in the winter due to lack of volume.

It would end up being about 1000gallons since it's has different layers, do you think a heater to melt the ice would keep them alive? Also have herd keeping the filter running would help to.

Sorry I have no experience with ice. Maybe someone else (Muske) can lend some advice. I've heard of people covering the pond with a tarp or bringing their fish into a holding tank for winter.

I don't see how a tarp would keep it from freezeing, and I really hate to bring them in. Hope he chimes in. I can see if we could dig it deeper.

Koi can survive in waters down to about 20-30 degrees. But you need to keep a hole in the ice to allow for gas exchange.

In all honesty, I would try to go down another foot- foot and a half if possible.

At 1,000 gallons depending on the size of your koi, you're looking at single digits to keep everything in check unless you run massive filtration.

Define massive filtration? Im eyeing a magdrive. We can aim to go deeper but the size of the tarp is what's holding us back I think. May have to squeeze it down a little.

What would you guys suggest to keep a hole in the ice?

Magdrive is not filtration- that's pumping capacity.

I have a 1500 gallon indoor koi tank- per the "koi rules of keeping" I should only have 3-4 20+ inch koi and that's it- they need about 500 gallons of swimming room.

I have way tooo many koi in this tank- I'm gonna say at least 70. A few 18-30", but most under 12".

My tanks turns over once an hour using an ES1500 pump- attached to 2 40 watt UV lights- which feeds into a 55 gallon S/G (sand gravel) filter, and then out into trickle towers with bio balls and lava rock.

Tank has a bottom drain, and a skimmer.

If you want to build this pond correctly the FIRST time, do you research first. Install a skimmer, and a bottom drain. And do not add rocks, or gravel.

My 6000 gallon koi pond that I am building is being set up for 4 55 gallon SG filters, and 4 55 gallon poly strapping barrels. With 2 ES5000 pumps and UVs.
