can you do this? i kno there cold water fish but ive seen that a few people have them with there tropicals...

can they handle the heat?
ive noticed gold fish can actuly survive in tropical conditions, so would this be the same with koi?

Ideal Temperature Range for Koi 65°F-75°F 20°C-25°C

Acceptable Temperature Range 35°F-85°F 2°C-30°C

this below comes from one of the Koi sites

Feeding fish versus Temperature:

Less than 50°F Do Not Feed
50°F-60°F 2-4 times weekly
60°F-85°F 2-4 times daily
Above 85°F Do Not Feed

i read somewhere the warmer the temp the more times you feed them. not more food but more times a day cause they burn it off faster.......once you go too hot or too cold their body actually rejects food and thats when they can possibly die......someone correct me if im wrong by all means

metabolism increases with temp, in koi to a max of 28 degrees. Thats where the ideal temp lies when you want to powerfeed/grow them. Ive had koi in my tank for a couple of years and that went prefectly well. always had temp around 28 and they grew like crazy. so yes, they can be kept in a tropical tank without any probs.

yes it is true if the temperature becomes too cold you cant feed them. the food would just sit in there stomach and eventually kill them. and i have found that you can keep koi in freezing temperatures too. well at least through the winter in a pond when it gets extrememly cold. i dont think you should have those problems in a tank lol

Maintaining them at tropical temps in a small aquarium, versus a pond, can quickly become a maintenance nightmare. At elevated temps, koi metabolism rises to the point that they don't do much else besides putting out wastes. They have an increased output of metabolized food, increased urea output, and increased slime coat production. All these proteins given off requires increased biological/mechanical filtration and increased frequency of water changes.

so if i caught one from a pond (cold water) would it be ok to throw into a tropical tank?
id raise the temp slowly over 24hours
would that be ok?

as long as you raise the temp slow it shud be no problem. i dont know how cold the water in the pond is, but it might be wise to take a couple of days to adapt if the difference is big.
