Hello I have a 800gallon pond with 4 koi ranging from about 5"-7" along with 5 feeder gold fish. I've had my oldest koi for about 4 months and it doesnt seem to be growing. All my other koi are growing and eat at everyfeeding but this koi doesnt seem to eat very much. It's been like this ever since I got it. Is it just genetics? or is there something more to it? It looks healthy and swims around with the other fish just fine

Thanks all....when i say it doesnt eat much it maybe eats 3-4 small pellets a day. Im uncertain the time it spent at the LFS but it was the biggest koi in the tank and is about 4-5"

idk if koi display any kind of aggressive behavior..but maybe that one is the runt of the lot.

i have a bunch of oscars that are the same way.

This is an old post, but since my main hobby/profession is koi, I can point you in some direction hopefully...

Koi can be aggressive with food. Train them to feed at one spot of the pond/tank. If you find that this koi is not eating much, you can try throwing extra food in the tank and hope it eats it, or you could separate the particular fish, and feed it separate so that it doesn't have to worry about the other fish. Koi, especially smaller koi get spooked easily with shadows, noises, etc... Have you ever tried throwing food in the tank from a distance so that they can not see you? He simply could be scared.

Do not automatically assume that it's parasites. Do you see any stringy white feces looking strands in the pond? That's the first sign of internal parasites.

What are you feeding them? The brand.. How often?

What are your water parameters? PH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, kh, gh, temp...
