thanks i really appreciate that! but does that guy eat only algae and i guess it will eat the koi food but how large will it reach and just to make sure will it be able to live outside in the pond all year around in NC???

alot of people use common plecos but the need to be brought in in the winter

Hi-fin banded sharks grow pretty slow. I haven't seen a lot of adults but grow pretty big. They can handle colder temperature but I'm not sure about them lasting through the winter.

The answer is koi! Once they are large enough, they take care of the string algae themselves. If he is concerned about the single-celled floating algae, there is no fish that will eat this.
To get rid if this algae he needs a superb filtration system, or a UV light.

Water Hyacinth, sounds daft but all plants in the Eichhornia family will live off the same nutrients that algae do, therefore the more plants you have the less algae will bloom as it's got nothing else to live on.
