Im figuring out the stock for my pond that I'm getting ready to build...

Im torn between koi, and a few monster catfish, (RTC, TSN, RTCxTSN maybe) so my question is, could I put some big-ish (1-1 1/2ft) koi with a smallish (<1ft) rtc? I know the rtc will get bigger than the koi in no time and might end up eating them....But could this work for a short amount of time? And would I be better off purchasing some larger 2ft+ koi from the start?

Thanks

Pond is around 3500 gallons.

rtc will still outgrow most probably the koi and still eat it.

Hmmmmm....Ok...Thanks

depending where you're at i'd go catch some channel cats and throw em in there with your koi, still get some big cats and get your koi as well without having to worry all that much about them getting eaten

I would keep the temperature around 72-75ish.

I think I might start with koi only for a year or two and see if I can keep up with it, and if I want to carry on with the pond. If so, then I might invest more money into it and introduce an rtc and some heaters for the winter...

I will look into channel cats though. Thanks!

I would not suggest adding the 2- You could add a channel cat, but from experience, Koi are dirty fish, and catfish are even dirtier. Not to mention that you will be paying $$$ for koi over 2 feet. (Even low grade koi)

Koi are not easy to take care of, as they are not as hardy as goldfish, and they are much more sensitive to bacterias and water parameters.

My advice would be to do one or the other. I think for 3500 gallons you could get about 7 decent sized koi in there. 500 gallons per large koi.

OR, you could do koi, and a Sterlet. The mini version of a sturgeon. :D

Sturgeon are lovely.

I think I will try koi. They are much prettier than any type of goldfish I can find...And I will definitely be keeping the load light. I was actually planning on only having 2-3 koi...But I might limit that to 2 and get a sturgeon :naughty:
