Ive got an 18 gallon aquarium that is very densely planted with very small sand as the substrate. I am interested in adding a circulation pump to keep particles from landing all over the plants. The two pumps that I am interested in are the Koralia 450 and the Aqueon 500. My question here is which pump would be able to circulate the aquarium without creating a sandstorm. The inhabitants of the tank are 4 neon tetras, 4 black neons, 4 corydoras, 2 siamese algae eaters, and 1 male betta.

Is the Koralia a more reliable appliance? Whats your reason for preferring it?

They are both nice pumps... Good circulation with low power consumption. If you can, look at them both in person and decide what you like more. I like the magnet suction of the koralia. Either way I don't think you will be disappointed.

Koralia, no questions. As Clock mentioned, go with a lower flow. The aqueon runs an impeller, which will be destroyed by the sand. The Koralia runs a turbine, which the sand will not affect.

Thanks I will keep that in mind WildFya thanks. Also what did you mean by the Aqueon runs an impeller that will be destroyed by the sand, does that mean it would stir up a bunch of sand?

I see why an impeller would be destroyed by sand and a turbine wouldn't, but why did you say the sand would destroy it? Is that suggesting that the flow would kick up the sand??:confused::confused:

Thanks for everyones help I think I will be getting a Koralia 240.
