great barr,west midlands
My Kribs spawned within a month of me purchasing them, they flirted for abot 3 weeks before anything solid happened, they finally did and 3 days ago the fry were free swimming, they shepherded them around for a whole day took them to various safe spots in the tank, day 2,they start to abandon the fry here and there for no reason, then come back to them and so on and so forth, this carries on all day 2,day3 i find that there are no fry to be seen anywhere and my female krib has been beaten to near death, she was pale grey in colour and her fins are clamped up,i separated her straight away to give her a chance to recouperate, shes a lot better now,i have let her loose again but she continues to hide,i have no other place to put her as a breeding trap i have is full of 1 day old guppies(my dither fish),what could have possibly gone wrong, ive read that females can get aggresive towards males after spawning but never the other way round, has anyone experience this and what would be the best course of action after krib fry are free swimming? is it good to separate the parents, then again kribs in the most case both look afte their fry and do not show aggression towards them,i am puzzled, what has gone wrong?

I wrote a long post to your question but for some reason it didnt post it :-(
Basically what happened is normal if its there 1st spawn, they do get better usually after the 2nd or 3rd go. Next time they spawn try feeding them a little brine shrimp/bloodworm (something they cant resist) the one that comes out to feed is the one that you need to take out. The one that stays with "the kids" is the better parent. If you do not have another tank then divide the tank. Best of luck and let me know how you get on.

I too try to over feed the parents when they're getting ready to breed to keep them satisfied and healthier through the process. I noticed that when breeding any fish that some are just bad parents and maybe that gets better with time. But anytime you're breeding you should have an extra tank ready.

Thanks, all info appreciated, your right on though, these particular kribs were good parents for all of 1 day!!! then it all just went hay wire, today i have'nt seen the male all dayi wonder where he is,the female is back to normal now and is fine, there is fry here there and everywhere separated all over ,i might just remove all guppies and leave this tank for my kribs,do you think they can servive without parents help and obviously my help, they are so hard to spot!!! Thanks again for the info

Definatly will invest in a cuople more tanks, ithey will indeed be very useful in the future,i have a small hospital tank but its not big enough for anything, only 5 gallons.More tanks a must, wife not too happy!!!

I usually take mine away from the parents after 2 weeks so i can keep them in a 10 gallon on there own for a few weeks (its easier to do WC everyday) to grow quicker. Im sure after a week i could but just incase i wait 2. You could try leaving in a couple guppies so they act as a dither fish , hopefully that way the parents wont fight.....but dont hold your breathe !
Good luck
