I'm setting up a 240g Amazon community tank and am very interested in getting a pair or small group of Krobia sp. "Xingu.' I see that some of you have them and appear to really like them. The photos I've seen are impressive.

Question 1: I've been checking all of the cichlid merchants' stock lists and nary a one has these available. Does anyone know of someone who has some juvies they're looking to sell?

Question 2: How do adults fare with smaller fish, such as Dicrossus or Apistogramma? I have Krobia guianensis with Apistogramma steindachneri and there is no problem, but perhaps sp. Xingu is more piscivorous?

Thanks in advance.

I have never seen my Xingus attack anything but each other, though I did have some rams in with them for a while and the rams slowly disappeared one by one. I don't know if they slowly died of natural causes or if the Krobia were attacking them when I wasn't around. I have also kept my Krobia with Laetacara, but the Laetacara are a bit bigger and more assertive than rams.

I haven't seen them on lists for a while. Jeff Rapps had some a few months back but I got the last four. Tom (Aquanero here on the forum) had a small group of fry from his pair, but I don't know if he grew them out or not. You may search for his thread. I have eight right now and they flirt all the time, but still no actual spawns.

Since Rapps had them a few months ago, I haven't seen them on lists. Maybe Ryan or Aquanero will have some fry soon. I'm growing some out...looks like I have 1m/2F so hopefully some magic soon, as well!

I bred my previous ones many times...just really struggled to raise fry. They're one of those fish that lulls you into the belief that they're going to be good parents...but not so much! Woulda, shoulda, coulda on artificially raising fry...

These guys can grow to every bit of 6"... I wouldn't trust them with Apistos or anything near small enough for their mouths. I keep mine with Guianacara and Cichlasoma / Aquidens-types. They're more hungry than predatory.

Great fish and I'm sure that some will appear soon!

Matt

thanks for the info. Sounds like I'll just have to keep looking until somebody posts a few for sale. If someone has some they'd consider selling, please send me a PM. Thanks,

I currently have a breeding pair. I have 6 fry I'm currently growing out from a spawn in late July, I should have had more but the spawn coinsided with vacation time and I was unable to give them the attention I normaly would have. They are currently about 1/2". The pair is currently in a 220 SA comunity and are starting to show signs of wanting to breed again. I also have a male in a 55 which I had to seperate from the pair as it was being harrassed relentlessly by the dominant male. I started them on 1st bites and BBS and have just switched them to micro pellets and daphnia. Mine are currently the only breeding pair around that I'm aware of hopfully that wouln't be the case for long. I'm not aware of anyone that has any for sale Jeff told me he lost his male while back and was currently growing some out to breed in the future. Other than Ryan and Matt who you already heard from no one else on here is currently putting any effort in breeding them that I know of. If your still interested in them in another month or so get in touch with me and I'll get a few to you I want to keep two for myself. I don't charge fellow members for fry, you pay the shipping cost and you can have them for free. I would love to see more of these in the hobby. I'm also trying to see if I can get a pair of Aquadens Metae to spawn, fingers crossed.

Wow, thanks for the great response. I'm definitely interested in your fry and putting some serious effort into getting them to eventually spawn to share more of these amazing fish with others. The tank will be dedicated to a handful of Tapajos and Xingu endemics in tribute to these river systems and their highly threatened fish fauna. Krobia sp. Xingu is a must have if at all possible!

Thanks again

Here's a couple quick pics of the little guys. Not great pics but they kept darting all over the place.
