Hey all I think my L-114 leopard cactus pleco 8 inches has finally settled in his 80 gallon with a scooby which is 3 inches and he completlely ignores. I 'am feedING NLS 3 mm pellets AA+++ PLUS TETRAMIN PRO crisps. What do all of you think? I tried zucchinni but only my little bn will eat that the other two will not touch veggies as they are carnivores. I tried carnivore pellets and he would eat them buit I can't stand the smell of them. lol I also read that bloodworms are bad for plecos because of the endoskeleton on the worms which are really flies. Also read to only use raw shrimp for plecos as cooked leave iodine in the water. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Hikari wafers? My L264 (leporicanthicus) seems to prefer them a lot. I like how they are high in protein, but also high in vegetable matters (to provide fiber and prevent bloat).

And what's a scooby? (Great dane dogfish?)

Hi

"Scooby" I am guessing is a L-14

I feed my L-114/600's carrots. It seems to be the veggies they like most. I don't trust market shrimp so i don't feed it to my plecos.
I feed them frozen unsweetened green peas, fillets, scallops and hbh wafers.
They also love frozen krill.

cooked shrimp only leave iodine because some have table salt added into them in processing and table salt in treated with iodine. heck that is why they call it Iodized Salt.

he should have no prob with blood worms. My pleco loves them and has had no problem

I'm a little wary of my fish getting bloating from feeding too much shrimp, per the below link-thread (from planet catfish). The advice that I've gleamed from posts such as below are to try to keep them on diet with veggies in addition to meat. But then again, this was in reference to L-264, not L-114.

L114's are mainly carnivores, not herbivores. Bloat isn't caused by fresh whole foods, it's more of a problem when dried pellets and such swell up in their stomach. You'll never go wrong feeding fresh whole foods to a carnivore. Like shrimp, mussels, crickets, thawed bloodworms, earthworms, mealworms, etc. That said-my L114 eats judging by his nice round stomach but I sure never see him do it. He waits until it's completely dark in the room before he'll come out.

I've notice that with my own Carnivores pleco.. i have two, both are Goldies, only their sizes are 3" and 10"

I've notice my little one explores more than my 10" one.. the seems to be hiding most of the time until its pitch black..... But yes.. shrimp, mussels and bloodworms are great for the carnivores species..

From a planetcatfish article (shanesworld):

Feeding
The feeding regime is similar for both colonies. We feed the fish a variety of foods, all mixed, on a daily basis. Staple food includes a mixture of Dr. Bassleer XXL, Ocean Nutrition Formula 2 - medium sized pellets, OSI shrimp pellets, Hikari Carnivore Pellets and Blue Line Grade 122 Basic. The fish can also eat, should they want to, Ocean Nutrition Formula 1 and Blue Line Bottom Spiru tablets. Ocean Nutrition frozen Bloodworms are also offered once a week supplemented by the occasional treat of frozen prawn or mussel. In addition to the above, the fish in Manchester enjoy fresh vegetables and fruit daily. We have been told that, in the wild, the fishermen catch these fish by putting small coconut trees in the water; the fish collect round their roots to graze, which is an indication that they do enjoy vegetable matter and rasping on wood. In Athens the fish are fed 3 times daily (16:00 main meal, 19:00 2 small quantities, 22:00 2 small quantities; one additional feeding a month prior to spawning). In Manchester the fish are fed once daily, between 18:00 and 19:00.

Wow NLS is the way to go. Ingredients are whole foods and a lot of fiber and the right protein. They said shrimp and prawns only as a treat and bloodworms once a week. This was actually a breeding article for l-114's. Thanks for the replies. This L-114 cost me over 4 bills with shipping and I want to do the right thing. ALos looking for a large female for it to try and breed it. By the way a scooby is an L-14 sunshine or goldy pleco. Mine always stay in the open. Most be the garlic in the NLS. LOL

I know this was awhile back, but what's wrong with market shrimp?
