Hey MFK, I just witnessed my L-190 run over and start chowing down on a stray krill that got away from my oscars. She isnt starving, she has wood, fresh veggie chunks/slices daily with an algae wafer each night after lights go out. Dose my L190 need meat in her diet? she sure seemed to dig that krill.

my opinion younger plecos need a higher protein diet. As long as the diet offered is varied they will eat what they need.

The occasional meaty food is fine. The base diet should, like you said, consist of wood, veg and wafers.

Ya.. sometimes L-190 would switch diet and will actually go carnivorous.. I keep mine with a Goldie and my L-190... so the food sometimes gets mix together..

My plecos eat all the flake food that gets to the bottom of the tank my albino bristlenose does never seen my other plecos do it.

I try to keep a 75% veggie/25% protein ratio with my Royals. But they'll eat anything. Just like kids-candy isn't good for them but if given the choice of candy over broccoli they're going to want the candy every time. I've read that too much protein in an omnivore Plec will shorten their life. But seriously-who's ever actually tested that?

A panaque pro found that large royals who seemed to die prematurely often had fatty deposits around their organs. Royals are built to gouge wood and its associated epifauna/flora, meaty foods should be fed sparingly.
