I've always like L number plecs but was always worried to put them in my tanks incase they got bullied and nipped at....or just swallowed. How do you guys (and gals) think a tank would look with only L number plecs in it? And possibly one species of fish to create some movement. What subrate etc you think would be the best for this sort of tank?

I'm thinking of this again because I seen a Snowball, Golden nugget and a few others at the shop, I got a L034 today, or a Medusa Plec it was called there, ill get pics once hes settled in.

Welcome to my tank. I have a 100 gal. complete with no substrate (barebottom). I have a school of Emporer red hook silver dollars for movement. One L-114 pleco 11 inches. 1 albino bristlenose 5 inches. 1 L-14 sunshine pleco 3 inches. 1 green phanthom L-200 6 inches. My L-114 leopard cactus will not bother smaller plecos. Anything his size he will not tolerate. The silver dollars and my big L-114 ignore each other. I had an L-25 9 inches that the L-114 shredded so I gave the L-25 to my neice with the orders it stays in the family. LOL

I run 2 aquaclear 110's on the 100 gallon and for decoration/hiding a lot of malaysian driftwood. The plecos are always moving around and the big guy nevers really hides. He did when he was smaller. The emporer red hook silver dollars are constantly cruising the tank. If you are lucky enough to find a large L-114 like mine be weary some can be downright nasty.

My suggestion would be to have only 1 type of L pleco (or 2, if they are very different in size), but if possible several of them. They are more active, defending their territories from each other, and as a result you are more likely to see them, rather than them hiding. In one tank, I have 4 L-204s and an L07. The L7 hides most of the time, but the L-204s are out a lot more, interacting with each other.

I'd be curious what fish you have for movement. I use lots of tetras (cardinals, congos, and diamonds). I just got in to dwarf chiclids (apistos); they'll hopefully do well with the fancy plecos.

Species only tanks are the way to go if you're looking to successfully breed most L numbers. I have many, and the mortality rate is basically zero. Plenty of filtration/water movement, clean water and patience and it can be very rewarding.

Great idea.
I dont know the whole L number thing yet but I do like Plecos. My intention is to do a pleco tank soon as well. Infact I think ill search for a L number listing now so I can referrence it.

Remember not all L numbers are small plecos, in fact even one of the commons have a L number
