whats the difference and how do you know if your fish is the highest quality available?

L1?
Do you meen F1?
The whole F thing is like this:
F0 Means wild caught
F1 means that its parents were wild caught.
And so on...

Atleast, I think thats what you're talking about?
:)

I prefer f1 or other early generations since those much later (like typical petco, petsmart fish) are genetically weaker most of the time

okee dokee thanks and ya f1 sorry

Yes, usually their genetics are stronger from being from the wild or closely related to it and theres not as much inbreeding going on but as long as you get your fish from a reputable source you'll never have this problem. I like f0's because I know they are pure breds, they usually have nicer colors, and they're just a lot cooler knowing they're wild caught but at the same time they're not as hardy in the aquarium. For instance.. I can get line bred discus and bring them home and put them in my pH of 8. If I got one from the wild I would never be able to acclimate it in to my water. There are good qualities for both, it all depends on the type of fish you're getting whether or not you should go with wild caught. Morale of the story is to know where you're getting your fish and to know who you're getting them from.

Great points there, also for me, the main reason I would get an f0 would be to make sure it a pure fish, especially if it is a Vieja or some other kind of cichlid that is really watered down in terms of hybrids. Then I would get an f0 or f1 from someone like Rapps.
