In the last 3 weeks or so I acquired 2 L191's that are pretty small (about 2"). Neither one will touch algae wafers as of right now. I'm not extremely concerned about it as they have a large chunk of white oak in there with them that they are constantly munching on and I've been feeding some romaine lettuce, zucchini, or kale at least a few times per week. I'm just not sure how to get them to try the Hikari algae wafers without removing the wood and leaving it as a last resort (which I don't want to do).

It takes time they will eventually come around just look out for sunken belly it seems royals are prone to sunken belly at a young age

Thanks. I'll try to get some pics up later tonight. I know one of them looks really skinny to me from the bottom, but not bad from the top.

If they are eating the wood same veggies why does it matter if they easy the wafers? as long as they are eating a diet of veggies and wood I'd be perfectly happy. Most commercial wafers aren't the best nutritional food out there anyways

Mainly because it's hard for me to tell how much they're actually eating this way. Also, it's much easier to make sure you have a supply of prepared food on hand. I'd still be feeding the veggies if they were eating the wafers, but I wouldn't have to always make sure I have a supply on hand that might or might not spoil. Finally, because I'm more confident in a food manufacturer's capability to provide a well-rounded diet in a wafer taking from anywhere in nature than I am of making sure they get all the nutrients they need from a limited supply of veggies and wood.

Yeah, one definitely has a very sunken belly. He also is pretty washed out in color in comparison to the second one (more brown and black than green and black). The other looks good and is eating well. I haven't been able to get a pic yet with a camera where I can post it here. I'll continue trying. Anything I can do to increase his chances? His eyes still look fine to me (I read somewhere that they can get sunken eyes as well).

He didn't make it. :rip

The other is still doing well though.
