hey guys, my little brother wants to make some $ and he would like to breed these plecos (green phantom pleco). we were wondering if you guys had any info for us, as we have never bred plecos before. are these guys polygamous (sp.), or do they pair for life or something like that? any other info is appreciated. thanks in advance:)

No loricariids are monogamous. Also, as far as anyone is concerned, L-200s have only been bred a small number of times; mostly via German breeders, and L-128 has been similar spawned in Europe. The baryacnsitrus version, to date, has not been bred with any documented evidence. The waters they live in, however, are white or clear water rapids, with neutral pH and medium to low hardness. The substrate is generally silt, and they tend to dwell between and amongst rockwork. That's probably your base one for breeding, though, as has been shown over and over, loricarids breed just fine in unnatural environments.

I'd suggest you to sstart off with something a little less demanding, spawning wise; maybe an ancistrus, and work your way up...

Not the easiest task of you ahead... its not in any way shape or form a common feat. Finding some that are a decent size can be hard enough lol! Wyldfya had some eggs from some large 11" or so specimens, but unfortunately nothing came of it. If you do a search theres a very very long thread on it all going through a number of stages, and also probably a couple of other threads. I'd be tempted on trying a different species though if this is the first attempt...

Good luck getting a group together that are large enough to breed. These are not an easy pleco to breed. Without prior experience, I would say that you are going to be very hard pressed. Start with bristlenose plecos, and once you are more comfortable with what all it takes to not only get the plecs to breed, but also to raise their young, then you should start thinking about L200s. Do you know which species of L200 you are wanting to breed?
