L234 are they rare plecos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Somewhat. Price is what keeps a lot of people away from them. The seem to show up around spring time and the fall. Another thing is they always seem to be big. Like 10+ inches

Ive seen a few in the last year at a lfs. Very pricey tho. I think the smaller one was about 10" and about $200. I heard they dont get along with any other bottom feeders and will kill them. I think they are beautiful.

You aren't going to see in many, if any shops, but thats due to their price and popularity, not that they are especially rare or hard to get. It should be easy enough for a good shop to order one in. Their situation may have changed though with the new IBAMA allowed list but I think their distribution is not entirely in Brazil.

As in2cichlids said, they are nearly always 10"+ in the UK and US but I have seen smaller ones down to 4" on Japanese sites, I guess they command a premium.

like said above they are not hard to get, i see them on one of my suppliers lists every week, but they are pricey, mostly due to shipping costs as they normally come in big sizes and can only fit 1 or 2 per box.

The "rare" thing about my L234 is seeing him. He comes out every 1 or 2 weeks for a brief appearance. I got him about a year ago at 10" and now he's about 11". He is calm with my 12" - 14" L155, L418, L190 and L330.
